We flew home from Anaheim just to turn around and drive back! We were literally home for a couple days and only had enough time to wash clothes and repack our suitcases. We loaded up the van and drove to San Diego to drop the kids off at my parents' house while we went on a cruise!
The cruise left out of Los Angeles and went up the Pacific Coast. On day one, we familiarized ourselves with the ship by taking lots of pictures (haha), played some trivia games, went to a poolside party, played basketball on the deck court, ate French food (Paul had escargot for the first time!), and attended the evening Showtime comedy show. Day one was definitely a success!
On day two, we were out to sea so we decided to celebrate our early anniversary. But really, the whole cruise was a celebration of everything Paul had missed when he was away. We are just big party animals these days. We spent the day watching an Asian cooking demonstration (unfortunately, I still will probably never make sushi in my lifetime) and playing more basketball and trivia games. In the evening, we attended a Merengue dance class and then stuffed our faces with SOO much food at an Italian restaurant. We went to the evening Showtime which was a Band/Dance performance, and just felt miserable from all the food! But it was definitely worth it. For the rest of the evening we slugged around watching a newlywed game and listening to bands perform in the lounge.
Day three was another day at sea so we attended a second cooking demonstration class, this time for French food. It was too complicated for me, so again, I will probably never make the dish that was taught. Maybe in the next life. We played a family progressive pictionary game and learned that the two of us make a pretty good team. Unfortunately, our team was also joined with some older women who had 10 too many margaritas. It was painful watching them draw and guess. Oh well, winning isn't everything. Well, sometimes, it is. But you get my drift. Paul was later dubbed Ring Toss Champion. He whooped those old ladies with their canes and grandpas with their walkers with his left hand sneak attack. We laid low that afternoon, I mean, there was just so much excitement from winning Ring Toss that we settled in to watch a talent show and listen to a Beatles name that tune game.
That evening Showtime was by far my favorite from the cruise. An acrobatic couple, Luminescence, performed a lovely story and their talents were simply amazing. Later that night, Paul was involved in a Battle of the Sexes game. Each contestant had to make and throw a paper airplane. His plane, which he called The Rock, held up to its name. It literally went straight down. The rest of the game involved singing songs, racing to put shoes on, and making the largest circle with people in it. Needless to say, the women won the game. But it was fun to watch Paul participate. We topped the night off with some music and a country hoe down. Day three was exhausting, but fun!
Day four was our first day in port. We arrived to Astoria, Oregon and headed on the Seaside and Cannon Beach excursion. At Seaside Beach we were able to swing on the swings and find beautiful, whole sand dollars. The wind was quite intense, but that made it even more fun!
We then stopped at Cannon Beach, where the famous Goonies movies was filmed. We felt special.
After we returned to the ship we attempted our luck playing some goofy golf, but I guess all our luck was used on the ring toss. That evening we attended the Showtime, which was a variety comedy show. Once again, Paul was chosen out of the crowd to participate. The comedian chose 4 people out of the audience and threw them each a ringed frisbee. The plan was to have each person throw their frisbee and the comedian was going to catch them around his neck, 4 in a row. So, the first guy threw his ring, nailed it. Then a lady threw hers and she missed. So it started with the first guy again. It finally reached Paul, who was third, and he threw a line-drive. I mean, the guy had no chance of catching it with this head. So the comedian told Paul, "Hey, you see how the others gave me this nice toss? Try that." It went back to the first guy, then the second, and then Paul. This time he threw it way too high. Again, back to the beginning. On Paul's third try, he threw it, and immediately a guy in the crowd yelled, "Oh, sh*t!" It was too low and I think I about peed my pants. The comedian yelled, "Paul, did I do something to piss you off???" The whole crowd was busting up. So, the comedian told Paul he was fired and threw it to someone else. That guy screwed up even worse, so Paul was rehired. Finally, Paul made the shot and the comedian completed all 4 throws. It gets better though. Later that night we went to get dessert and some lady stopped him and said, "You're Paul, right?" Haha, Paul became famous.
The excitement continued as we played a majority rules game and then we ended the night with the band playing in the lounge. If the ocean didn't have 5 foot swells that night (our room was toward the front) we would have had no problem sleeping. It was a crazy day!
On day five we arrived in British Columbia, Canada and went zip-lining. We were able to get a tour and see the beautiful city as we drove to the mountains. Zip-lining was totally worth it and we had fun with each other and our group.
On our last night, we went to dinner at a Japanese grill-style restaurant and had a blast. I was a little worried as Japanese food is not my favorite but I would totally go again. The last evening Showtime was an acrobatic/dance performance, kind of combining the previous pieces from other nights. It was very well done and very entertaining.
We tried to become contestants on a game show that night, called The Perfect Couple, but in order to be selected, you had to kiss passionately in front of everyone and then the crowd cheered for who they wanted. We were glad we can't (according to the audience) kiss passionately because let's just say that game show was not one we would have wanted to participate in. So, we hit up the hot-tub instead.
The next morning we disembarked in Vancouver, Canada and headed to the airport. Overall, we REALLY enjoyed our cruise and loved the time together. While we love our children, spending this time alone was definitely needed as a recharge from the previous year apart. Oh, and towel creations, we can't forget how much we love the towel creations. We're ready to sign up for the next cruise, but we're not so sure grandma and grandpa are ready for that just yet!
